Markets under threat

(Sunshine Coast Daily, Monday, July 7, 1980.)

Eumundi Market stall-holders want State Government legislation to protect it and similar markets throughout the state.

At a recent Eumundi Market, police told some stallholders they were breaking the law by selling on the footpath. The stallholders were told to shift back behind the building line or face charges.

Market organiser Ms Gail Perry said she now realised that not only was the future of the Eumundi Market at stake, but also all others on the Sunshine Coast and further afield.

“It’s not just the Eumundi Market we should be looking at but all other markets. Two others are soon to start at Woombye and Palmwoods and no doubt they will run into problems as they become established.”

Most of Eumundi’s business community attended a market committee meeting of the Eumundi Historial Society on Thursday night. (Rent from the market stall sites goes to the society’s museum fund).

The meeting favored continuation of the markets, agreeing that business on Saturday mornings had increased considerably as a result.

Speaking on behalf of opponents of the Eumundi Market in its present stage was Mr Theo Reinsma, owner of a mixed business in the town.

He said he was not against a flea market in Eumundi.

“But I am against commercial interests moving in and trading,” he said.
