Red-backed Fairy-wren

Red-backed Fairy-wren

Bird Life with Tony Wellington

The Red-backed Fairy-wren is the smallest of Australia’s fairy-wrens, and the only one not to display some blue plumage. Of course, it’s just the males that have the showy colours, while females and immature males are grey-brown.

Unlike their local relatives the Variegated Fairy-wren, the older male Red-backed Fairy-wrens keep their vibrant colours all year round.

These are dinky, busy little birds, that forage in family groups amongst tall grasses and low shrubs.
