History of Steve Irwin ( crocodile hunter ) growing up in Essendon Victoria
Steve grew up in Primrose Street Essendon…..going to Essendon primary school he wore his hand knitted Essendon footy jumper and the plastic sandals that had studs underneath that we all used to wear.
He enjoyed handball 4 square can kicking the footy. He collected footy cards and Monster jokes and riddle cards from chewing gum packets and liked the cap rockets we used to play with.
As he lived 2 doors up from the creek ,he spent a lot of time down there catching frogs ,frog spawn ,building forts out of anaseed stick poles , digging tunnels in the banks and digging up the clay under neath the grass and making models of lizards and snakes ,drying them on the concrete out the front of his house in the sun.
Steve’s dad Bob had started his reptile collection inside the house with Fred the python, lizards and the odd other snakes they were kept in heated cages they were fed live mice bought from a local pet shop.
Steve went to second Essendon cubs, until being kicked out for misbehaving. His father got home late each day from plumbing so Steve road his two wheeled pneumatic scooter and 3 wheeled big old fashioned push bike around the streets with all the other locals.
He was a tough kid running around barefoot in summer getting thistles and thorns in his feet from the creek.
He went in the school swimming sports events vs other primary schools at Essendon baths In Grade 5 the family moved to Beerwah Queensland to starts there new reptile park.
Small footnote Steve’s mum did ladies gymnastics in Essendon taught by Shane Jacobsons the Aussie movie actors Mum and Shane was a young lad watching on. I thought some people Might enjoy reading about his younger years in Essendon.
