Bird Life with Tony Wellington: Comb-crested Jacana

These birds are remarkably well-adapted to their habitat – which is any freshwater body of sufficient size to support water lilies. Their long, spindly toes allow them to walk across the lily pads as they hunt for insects and seeds. This has led to them being nick-named Jesus Birds. They are reasonably common on Lake Macdonald, but in NSW they are listed as vulnerable.

Jacanas turn the tables on traditional sex roles, with the male the one who builds the nest, sits on the eggs and raises the young. When presented with danger, a male will gather the chicks beneath its wings and run away with them.

Tony has worked as a filmmaker, artist, author, photographer and media lecturer. He has also been a Councillor on both the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Councils, as well as Mayor of Noosa.
